Fantasy Names

Whenever I sit down to draft a new story or roll up a character for a tabletop campaign, I hit the exact same wall: the name.

I can map out ancient continents, design intricate magic systems, and outline devastating plot twists in an afternoon. But the moment I need to name a rogue elf or a haunted citadel, my brain goes completely blank. A name is the very first piece of your world that an audience touches. If it feels flat, generic, or impossible to pronounce, the illusion shatters.

Over years of writing and worldbuilding, I’ve collected and created thousands of fantasy names across every archetype imaginable. Whenever I need instant inspiration on the fly, I also rely on handy tools like this name generator to spark new directions.

To save you from staring at a blank page like I so often do, I’ve compiled my personal master vault of 500+ fantasy names, divided into distinct categories with exactly 25 curated ideas per section.

How to Pick the Perfect Fantasy Name (My 3 Rules)

Even with hundreds of choices, settling on the right one can be tricky. Here is the framework I use when I’m stuck:

  1. Say It Out Loud Five Times Fast: If you trip over syllables when speaking normally, your readers and players will stumble too. Keep everyday characters easy to read.
  2. Anchor the Tone to the Culture: You don’t want your austere elven scholar to be named “Brog Ironfist.” Match phonetics to personality and background.
  3. Leave Room for Nicknames: Characters in living worlds don’t always use their grand formal titles. If you choose Valerius, decide whether his companions simply call him Val.
